Thin Veil

A thin veil, a cover of shame,
her heart lay battered as her frame.
Wounds ran like wolves through the night—
would she ever see the light?

Battles raged, blood was shed,
his voice still ringing in her head.
She could go, or she could stay,
but could she ever get away?

With shaky hands, she dropped the veil;
the truth she would no longer conceal.
With a twisted smile, she stood toe to heal,
taking back what he tried to steal.

He didn’t know that deep within,
she kept an ember from way back when.
She stoked the ember day and night
until the fire returned her light.

She lit a blaze every promise made.
She did not walk away unscathed.
With a bloody smile, she didn’t look back,
for what lay behind was broken and cracked.

Like a phoenix, strong with might,
she steps at last into the light.

She’s kind to her soul,
for it still grows.
Rooted in peace, but she still weeps.
The woman she was is no more,
but she sees beauty like never before.
Broken but pieced together, she’s beautifully made
from the pieces of a life where she once felt chained.

A thin veil, set to flame,
never again will she feel shame.
The battle’s been fought; the warrior remains.
Beautifully broken and wondrously made.
