The Price of Composure

How can you grieve what you don’t desire,
Shout you don’t want them gone, yet still conspire
With memory—reminding you they let you down,
Confessing upfront they had already found the one.

That busy, tense afternoon upon the road,
I prayed for warmth, not the chill of cold.
Beating the traffic, my chest overflowed—
Now I wish the journey had stretched much farther, slowed.

My intuition had whispered of the worst,
But I brushed it aside for a hopeful refrain.
I carried gratitude, blessed, not accursed,
Yet returned with sorrow, weary blues, and pain.

It drove me insane within a day,
I retraced our steps for a final replay.
To glimpse blurred moments before they gave way,
Blind to the wound you were waiting to lay.

How could you say you would wait for a toast,
When all you gave was bitter lime?
You found another, placed them foremost,
And told the world we were lost in time.

You gave me no break, no room to breathe,
Twisted my thoughts, made me seethe.
You stretched the pain to linger longer,
And all it did was make me weaker, harder.

I stayed composed that fateful night,
After you revealed your new delight.
I stepped back and blended into the show,
Though deep inside, a part of me let go.

I mastered control, emotions concealed,
Made them believe I was calm, well-heeled.
Yet within, a duel raged endlessly—
The cost of restraint was depleted sanity.
